Founding GroundWork Open Source, Dave Lilly knew that his belief in open source would create a new software business model that "does well" and "does good" at the same time. Often noted for claiming that the existence of open source software is the best evidence that people do their best work while collaborating with others, Dave approached commercial open source with a new business strategy that didn't create another proprietary software development model.
Dave's design for combining mature and proven IT Management open source projects into a single package that addressed IT Operational needs, established GroundWork's product maturity and market acceptance. Often, Dave says that other commercial open source companies that don't leverage existing open source for innovations and development "don't get it."
Dave is a recognized expert on systems monitoring, IT operations and IT Service Management. Drawing upon his extensive operating experience ranging from Network Operating Centers to control rooms of submarines, Dave developed a pragmatic and comprehensive vision for optimizing the cost and benefits of monitoring systems by the careful design of the interaction between people, process, and software functionality.
Dave was the originator of GroundWork's extensive library of best practices for monitoring and system management. He is the author of many white papers, articles, and presentations on the principles of industrial automation, monitoring, and business process reengineering.
Prior to co-founding GroundWork, Dave was the co-founder and President of SiteROCK Inc a managed services provider, and CapTech an IT services outsourcer. He graduated from Rutgers University (MBA) and the U. S. Naval Academy (BS).
