Insight Reports

Overview

Insight Reports capture both real-time and historical data about system availability and performance and are intended to be management level reports which allow viewing of weekly trends for total Alerts, Notifications, Outages, and top measurement data for Hosts, Services, Host Groups, etc.

Historical reports help identify and track longer-term trends to pro actively manage your IT availability and performance across time. These reports feature drop-down menus for easy configuration by time period and element detail level options for Alerts, Warnings and Notifications. Nagios monitoring logs are imported into the reporting system and Insight Reports can include data from other sources such as other monitoring tools, Service desk products, application logs and configuration databases.

The use of Insight Reports can improve availability by identifying chronic problem areas in the infrastructure that require attention and help make more intelligent decisions on resource allocation or purchasing by examining long term outage, alarming, and notification trends. They can justify or validate current infrastructure by providing usage statistics and improve efficiency of monitoring tools by using reports to optimize the configuration the tools.

The Nagios monitoring system generates a log that contains the results of all Host and Service checks. On a set time, the GroundWork data aggregation program will read this file and load a database with the results. A record is created for each measurement type, component, and day. Alarm, Warning, and Notification data is gathered using this method.

For Outages reports, a GroundWork data aggregation program will generate a Nagios Availability Report using the Nagios Web Interface, and load the results in the database. The data aggregation program uses HTTP to request the Host and Service availability measurements from Nagios.

The Insight Reports CGI programs generate the report pages by querying the database and generating the web pages and charts. To generate a report simply select Reports, then choose a report type (e.g., Alerts, Notifications, Outages), and select the corresponding reporting options, then Generate Report.

Alert Reports

Insight reports include six types of monitoring Alerts reports; Table, Totals Chart, and Top Alarms by Host Group, Host, Host/Service, and by Service reports. We've generated the Table and Totals Chart as an example and have listed a description of each of the reports below.

Figure: Alert Report Example - Table and Totals Chart

Table: Alerts Reports

Start Select Start date of the report to be generated.
End Select End date of the report to be generated.
Reporting Interval Indicate the data-reporting interval (Daily, Weekly, Monthly, or Yearly).
Table Shows the measurement table in the generated report.
The Table reporting option displays managed element totals (Host Groups, Host, Host-Services), and Alarm, Warning, and Notification totals, based on the selected reporting interval. Detail data is also available to chart by selecting the Detail Level option. Managed Host Groups, Hosts, and Host/Services represent the number of elements that are being monitored and is an indicator of the size of the infrastructure. For Hosts and Host Groups, alarms are defined as Host checks that result in a hard down status. For Hosts/Service and Service elements, alarms are defined as Service checks that result in a hard critical status. Host Group measurements are computed by aggregating counts for all Hosts in the Host Group.
Table Detail Level Lists each Host Group, Host, Host/Service, or Service detailed data for Alarms, Warnings, and Notifications in the measurement table.
Totals Chart Shows a Trend Chart - Total Alarms, Warnings and Notifications.
The Totals Chart displays Alarm, Warning, and Notification totals for the specified reporting period. A chart is generated showing a bar for each interval and measurement. If the number of interval samples is larger than can be supported by a bar chart, a line chart will be generated instead.
Top Alarms by: Host Group Generates Host Group chart in the report.
This reporting option lists the top Host Groups in descending alarm count order. Host Groups for example may be organized and named by Tech Groups such as Windows and UNIX; or Org Groups such as Operations and Help Desk; or Geographical such as SF or NY sites. A Trend Chart graphically displays the Host Group's number of alarms for the specified reporting date range. For each interval, a stacked bar shows each Host Group's share of alarms. The color of each bar corresponds to the color in the ranked list.
Top Alarms by: Host Generates Host chart in the report.
This reporting option lists the top Hosts in descending alarm count order. Hosts for example may be organized and named by Physical Device such as Server and Router; or Virtual Entity such as Application. A Trend Chart graphically displays the Host's number of alarms for the specified reporting date range. For each interval, a stacked bar shows each Host's share of alarms. The color of each bar corresponds to the color in the ranked list.
Top Alarms by: Host/Service Generates Host/Service chart in the report.
This reporting option lists the top Host/Service in descending alarm count order. Host/Service is a Host and its detailed Services. A Trend Chart graphically displays the Host/Service's number of alarms for the specified reporting date range. For each interval, a stacked bar shows each Host/Service's share of alarms. The color of each bar corresponds to the color in the ranked list.
Top Alarms by: Service Generates Service chart in the report.
This reporting option lists the top Services in descending alarm count order. A Service is independent of a Host and is grouped by protocol or monitor type. A Trend Chart graphically displays the Service's number of alarms for the specified reporting date range. For each interval, a stacked bar shows each Service's share of alarms. The color of each bar corresponds to the color in the ranked list.

Notification Reports

GroundWork Insight Reports offer ten types of monitoring Notifications reports including Table, Totals Chart, and Top Notifications by Host Group, Host (Host Notifications), Host (Host and Service Notifications), Host-Service, Service, Contact Group, Contact, and by Notification Method reports.
