System Requirements

Hardware

For a single GroundWork Enterprise Server, the minimum requirements vary with the intended purpose. For short-term or evaluation systems, monitoring small numbers of nodes (i.e 50 or less), a minimal configuration will suffice:

Physical:
  • 2 CPUs or Dual-core single CPU, 1.5 GHz minimum
  • 2 GB RAM
  • 20 GB Hard Disk
Virtual:
  • 1 CPU Virtual Machine on VMware ESX or Amazon EC2, 1.7GHz minimum
  • 2 GB RAM
  • 16GB of disk space

The virtual requirements assume that you will configure your VMware system in accordance with best practices for running a Java JVM in a virtual environment.

For more robust single-server configurations, the requirements are correspondingly more substantial. If you plan to monitor over 50 devices, and up to to 5000 or so, a single server should suffice, with the following specifications as a minimum:

  • 2 CPUs, or single Dual core CPU, 2GHz minimum
  • 4 GB RAM
  • 120 GB hard disk

Virtual machines are not recommended for large configurations, however, if you have access to fast storage arrays, you may use the specs above as a minimal configuration. Note that multiple CPUs in virtual environments require careful planning and resource allocation. If this is not possible, you should use single CPU configurations for virtual environments.

System requirements for distributed systems are somewhat more complex, but in general, a single server will serve as the “parent” for all configuration data, and as the primary user interface. If you are planning a distributed system, you should read the system planning guide here for information on various architecture choices.
