RRDtool Project Lead Tobi Oetiker initially developed RRDTool while at the San Diego SuperComputing Center (SDSC) at UC San Diego. He's also the project lead for MRTG and Smokeping. He's an electrical engineer by education and a system administrator by vocation. He is a principal of Oetiker+Partner AG in Switzerland, offering support, consulting and custom programing for his Open Source tools. In 2006 he received the System Adminitrators' Guild (SAGE) Outstanding Achievement Award.

RRDtool keeps your data files from growing quickly and overwhelming available disk storage; RRDtool stores your data in Round Robin Databases (RRDs) that maintain a fixed size over time: it performs this trick by averaging and compressing data on the fly as those data age, based on parameters you set. So, for example, you may have hourly data for some parameter for last week, but only one, averaged, weekly data value for the same parameter for three years ago.

GroundWork Monitor collects and stores RRDs, making them available for processing by other monitoring tools, particularly those involved in presenting those data in a meaningful way such as Cacti and MRTG. (Cacti is fully integrated into GroundWork Monitor Enterprise's Network Management Suite (NMS) offering.)
